When the Hogshead dropped anchor on the western bank of the River Humour the same night after passing Proud Sulking to make a trade with some corsers on shore, Cloud and Blunting, both armed with muskets, accompanied Poundich and several crewmembers in the jolly boat. After they made the trade, both groups were attacked by an ettin. Cloud and Blunting fired at it but the ettin was too strong and they were forced to flee. One of them did not make it back to the jolly boat but the other did and fired at the ettin as the boat pulled away, although it is not clear who survived. In a conversation with another crewman the following morning, Gibbon, the boatswain's mate who had been part of the landing party the previous night, mentioned Cloud and Blunting's role in the fight.
His name refers to the atmospheric mass.
