An ettin is among the largest of nickers, looking like enormous deformed men and reaching heights of up to 50 feet. They are strong, but not hard to hurt or kill despite their size and are not very bright and easy to outwit. When in a rage however, ettins are capable of great destruction, especially in gangs. This can become a problem for teratologists, but alone they are easier to destroy. They frequently raid the countryside for food in the winter months, and although it appears unlikely that ettins would not attack a large city, their sheer size and strength would probably make everymen easy targets for them.

Edit
The first ettin to appear was an unnamed one that attacked Poundinch's crew and a band of corsers who had met to make a trade on the western bank of the River Humour the same night that the Hogshead passed Proud Sulking. It surprised both groups, taking out several corsers with its arm. Poundinch and his crew fled, losing their dispensurist Sloughscab and another crewman, either Cloud or Blunting.
