Geography[]

Begun before the formation of the Empire, the Marrow is essentially a moat seperating a strip of tableland north of the Grassmeer from the wild country to the north. When the project was completed it stretched from the Pontus Cadmia to the Foeder Cides, a distance of more than 1,200 miles. It runs through the granite rock of the tablelands to the Spout. West of Benevenetium it is fed by a chain of rivers and swamps which form an additional protective barrier as far as Sebastian. On the tableland the Marrow is fed by a series of streams flowing north from the tablelands. Fortresses (including the Imperial capitol Clementine) called Ortygometria guard a series of crossing points into the wildlands. The Geometra, an Imperial highroad runs along the southern edge of the Marrow, linking these fortresses together.

The Marrow is also known as the Wurtem Way for the swamp out of which its main sources, the Crepitas and Wurtem Way (river) flow. Like most of the rivers in the Half Continent they were orignially part of an endorheic watershed.

History[]

Dido and her people began the work of constructing the Marrow, which was completed only after two centuries of labor in the face of monstrous depredation at enormous cost and thousands of lives. Aside from monsters of the wild lands, the Marrow also protects the Empire from their greatest adversaries, the Turkemen. The latter were unable to cross the barrier until invited by the last Sceptic emperor in a desperate attempt to fend off the Stately League. Following their defeat at the Battle of the Gates, most of their defeated army was driven into the Marrow or the surrounding lands.

Plot[]

Trivia[]

The Marrow is described as being longer than the largest canal in the real world, the Grand Canal in China, which is just over 1,100 miles long.
