The Grand Tour is an extended tour of the known world that can take up to several years. Because of the expense involved, only the wealthy can afford to undertake it. Highlights of the Grand Tour include the Marrow and the alternats, the subcapitals of the Haacobin Empire. Opera Gelderwine embarked on one earlier in her youth before founding Madam Opera's Estimable Marine Society for Foundling Boys and Girls.
It is similar to the historic Grand Tour, the traditional trip of Europe undertaken by mainly upper-class European young men of means. The custom flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transit in the 1840s, and was associated with a standard itinerary. It served as an educational rite of passage.
