Lamplighter-Sergeant Isambard Mulch was a veteran lamplighter who was stationed at Wormstool.

Mulch was a thick-set man with a bulbous nose and black mustachios.

Mulch led the lantern-watch from Wormstool that arrived at Bleak Lynche on the same night as Rossamünd Bookchild and Threnody to take up their posting. He was sitting and drinking with his fellow lighters in the Bleakhall and joined in the friendly ribbing of Threnody.[1]
The following morning he led his watch and the new lamplighters back to Wormstool. Mulch became aware of a monster wandering about in the thick fog that blanketed the road and halted the column while they waited for it. However Rossamünd's use of john-tallow to lure the monster away prevented a confrontation. At the cothouse Mulch spoke during breakfast, commenting on Sequecious and jestingly warning Fadus Theudas about Threnody. [2] The next day he assigned her and Rossamünd to feed and muck out the dogs kept at Wormstool, but this failed, as they realized that Rossamünd was a manikin and raised such a commotion that the rest of the garrison searched the cothouse perimeter as a precaution, but found nothing. Mulch later told Theudas to go easy on the new lighters during a game of pirouette.[3]
Although not explicitly mentioned, he was presumably killed during the Battle of Wormstool after the attacking monsters succeeded in gaining access to the upper floors of the cothouse.
Trivia[]
He may be named after English civil and mechanical engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. A mulch is a layer of material applied to the surface of an area of soil for various purposes.
