Limes is a short period every morning set aside by militaries the world over to insure that their members receive a daily ration of lemon or lime juice in order to prevent scurvy. It was instituted after the discovery that this disease could be prevented by ensuring that the men received a regular intake of citrus juice. Limes was a feature of Rossamünd Bookchild's tenure as a prentice-lighter, and the prentices had small beer laced with lime juice, which could also be supplemented with lemon rinds to suck on. It was not afterwards mentioned when he was billeted to Wormstool, but was presumably a fact of life there as well. Juice-of-Orange can also be used for this purpose, but it is a luxury item and unavailable to most but the wealthy.
