A lombarin, also known as a lombard after its inventors, the Lombards of the island of Lombardy, is a type of naval artillery. It is characterised by having a shorter barrel which reduces its accuracy but allows a lombarin to fire heavier shot than an equivalent cannon of the same weight. Consequently they are used more on drag-maulers or frigates, the cruiser class of ram. The agility of these types of ram helps compensate for the loss in range. They can also fire a much heavier weight of shot than if they were using conventional cannon or culverin.

History[]

The frigate NB Surprise was equipped with 32-pounder lombarins. During the Battle of the Mole, it used these to devastating effect against the Wretcherman main-ram Caldbink, raking it through the stern.

Trivia[]

The lombarin appears to be based on the real life carronade.
