A monster is any creature other than a human or a dumb animal. Known by a wide variety of names, they are widely feared and despised throughout the Harthe Alle. Despite this humans, especially those involved in the dark trades, also have sinister uses for them. Some, known as sedorners, are more favourably disposed towards monsters while fictlers even worship the dreaded false-gods.

Monsters can take many different forms, from animal-like to human in appearance. Many are a mixture of the two.
Scholars believe monsters are born when the sun warms a highly threwdish place. Some monsters are passive, or even helpful to humans, while others wish to harm everyman. It is not known whether monsters die of disease or old age, but some are hunted and killed outright by teratologists, professional monster-hunters.
In the Half-Continent, monsters are ranked most typically by their size and by whether or not they are live on the land or in the vinegar seas. The following is a list of monsters as classified by size, from the smallest to the largest:
Bogle is the most commonly used term for monsters in general, but can also mean the smaller ones that are less than a human's height.
- Nuglungs: Small, but very powerful bogles, which often have the head of an animal.
Nickers refer in general to all land monsters, but the term can also refer to those monsters that are the size of a human or larger.
- Ettins: The largest of the land monsters, who typically look like enormous deformed men and can be as large as 50 feet tall.
- Kraulshwimmen: Among the greatest and mightiest of the sea monsters, usually resembling grotesquely deformed fish.
- False-gods: Near-mythical monsters of enormous size and power who live at the bottom of the seas. Despite the belief that their return can spell doom for civilisations, they are still worshipped by organised cults known as septs.
Alongside the dreaded false-gods are the monster-lords, who dwell on land and are opposed to them. Ancient and powerful, their stances towards humans range from hostile, to benevolent, to neutral. Similar in appearance to specific animals, they can communicate with these animals and can also control the nature of the threwd that permeates their territory.
