Strakes are large cast-iron sheets that are riveted for protection, to the wooden sides of ironclad vessels. One strake is a sheet of uniform length, meaning that by counting how many there are down one broadside of a ram spotted at sea, someone can use a little arithmetic to guess how big she is.
