Verline is a marine society proprietress who was previously Opera Gelderwine's parlour maid. During Rossamünd Bookchild's time in the foundlingery she functioned as a surrogate older sister to him and after he left, kept him appraised of developments at Madam Opera's through her letters.
Verline is a short, slight woman with earth-dark hair. She wore the garb of a female servant, which consists of a white cotton bonnet, apron, and many-layered skirts. She adored bows and ribbons and adorned her otherwise plain working clothes with several of these.
Verline is a variation of the name Verlene, meaning "faith".
